Obedience Training

Beginners classes start on the first Tuesday of each month from February to November running from 7.00pm to 8.00pm at Heatley Park, Fulham Road, Heatley, in Townsville. New dogs and their handlers can sign up any Tuesday night for the next available class. Depending on numbers this may be the following month or even the one after that – we will let you know what month you can start.

All dogs are welcome as long as they are at least 16 weeks old and vaccinated.

No dog is too large or small or old or unruly to come to training. New handlers are requested to arrive at the ground by 6:30 pm to allow time for registration. We also ask that you wear sensible footwear while training (joggers are ideal). A cloth webbing lead and either a flat collar (leather, training or similar), or check chain are recommended for your dog (these can be purchased at the ground).

We will train you to train your dogs using positive reinforcement training methods of praise, food rewards, gentle patting and toys. Learn how to correct your dog’s misbehaviour in a non-aggressive manner.

Dogs are assessed on the last Tuesday of each month to determine if they are ready to progress to the next level, or remain at the same level for further training until the next assessment.

There are many factors that dictate the rate of learning, and it is important to understand that it is not a race to get through each class. Some dogs take more time than others to understand the exercise being taught, the amount of time you spend each day training will have an impact, bitches in season will lose a number of weeks each year when they can’t be brought to class, and any medical problems you or your dog may fall to will halt training for a few days or weeks. The important thing to remember is – don’t give up!!

Training and competitions are available for all dogs, regardless of breed or pedigree.

Beginners Class 7.00–8.00pm

Class One.

Learn how to get your dog to heel on lead at normal pace plus right and left turns, and right-about and left-about turns. Also the sit and stand exercises and beginnings of the recall.

Class Two.

Some new exercises to learn - teach your dog to drop, learn the slow and fast pace, and start on the stay command. Continue with the recall exercise and start introduction to the stand for examination.

Class Three.

Nearly there - learn the recall in full, stand for examination, stays off the lead, a 10 minute basic agility session and introduction to dumbbell retrieval.

Advanced Class 8.00-9.00pm

Class Four.

You can continue with your training for fun or with a view to compete in competitions in obedience, agility, jumping, tracking, and endurance.

Training Rules for Children under 10 years of age.

A local Council bylaw prevents children less than 10 years old to train dogs, but they are welcome to watch while a parent or friend attends a class.

Note:

No bitches in season are allowed on the grounds.

Owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pets (bags are provided).
